Article: Maintenance 2030: System and Project Development for the Munich S-Bahn

The growth of the Munich metropolitan region requires an expansion of public transport capacities. For the Munich S-Bahn, this means increased frequencies, the expansion of lines, and the increased use of longer trains. As a result, after the commissioning of the second main line, a 40% increase in traffic volume must be managed with new vehicles. To efficiently, qualitatively, and with the same performance meet these significant operational changes, a complete overhaul of the entire maintenance production system is required: The capacities for exterior and interior cleaning, graffiti removal, de-icing, wheelset processing, maintenance, and readiness must be fundamentally resized, aligned, and the individual facilities arranged in a process-compliant manner.

In this demanding project, the experts from DB Systemtechnik in Kirchmöser supported the Munich S-Bahn with technical and methodological consulting. In numerous workshops, the foundations of the new system were defined in a working group with colleagues from the Munich S-Bahn, and key requirements for the future infrastructure were identified.

The outcome was documented in tasks that detail the requirements for two new workshops and their peripheral facilities. The task for the new construction on the site of the decommissioned Regio workshop in Pasing has served as the basis and target for the construction of the first new workshop since April 2020. The developed scenarios allow for the commissioning of the new production system by 2029 and provide the necessary foundation for operational robustness during the ramp-up phase of operations on the second S-Bahn main line in Munich.
