The requirements for maintaining modern rail vehicles are continuously increasing, as is the need to provide technical personnel with targeted and consistent qualifications for new areas of responsibility. To address these challenges, DB Regio and DB Systemtechnik have jointly launched a comprehensive programme to develop and revise key qualification guidelines (Ril).

Modern vehicles, increasing availability requirements and growing technical complexity are constantly transforming rail vehicle maintenance. To ensure that employees in DB Regio workshops can continue to work safely, efficiently and in compliance with regulations, clear standards for training and qualification are essential. DB Systemtechnik plays a central role in this process. On behalf of DB Regio, our experts develop and update company-wide guidelines for the transfer of specialist and component-specific knowledge required to obtain maintenance qualifications, ranging from initial training through to specialist authorisations.

Starting Point: Consistent Standards for a Strong Fleet

DB Regio operates a diverse vehicle fleet, bringing equally diverse maintenance requirements. To maintain operational safety while increasing vehicle availability, new qualification standards are being established and existing guidelines are being revised. These guidelines are particularly relevant for:

    • Managers and supervisors
    • Instructors and trainers
    • Supervisory personnel
    • Maintenance employees carrying out maintenance work

The focus includes qualification guidelines for:

    • Rail vehicle electrical and mechanical systems
    • Vehicle control systems maintenance
    • Vehicle communication systems maintenance
    • Specialist areas such as door systems, refrigeration systems and vacuum toilet systems
    • Software loading authorisation
    • Operational release and recommissioning procedures

These guidelines define the required qualifications, the structure of learning content and the methods used to verify competencies, forming an essential foundation for safe railway operations.

Our Contribution: Systematic Development of Guidelines

DB Systemtechnik assumes responsibility, where required, for managing the development and revision of guidelines in accordance with group-wide regulations. Our experts support the entire process, from the initial concept through to publication.

Through close cooperation with DB Regio, workshop specialists and technical experts, qualification concepts are developed that ensure uniform standards, strengthen technical expertise and support the long-term availability and safety of the vehicle fleet

    Success Through Collaboration

A key focus of the project is the close coordination with DB Regio’s specialist departments. Subject matter experts, workshop managers and employee representatives are actively involved in dedicated working groups. This ensures that the resulting framework is not only formally compliant but also aligned with the practical requirements of day-to-day maintenance activities.

    Conclusion

By developing modern qualification guidelines, DB Regio and DB Systemtechnik are creating the foundation for safe, efficient and future-proof maintenance operations at DB Regio. After all, high-performance rail vehicles require not only advanced technology, but also highly qualified people to maintain them.
